Montserrat College of Art's Summer Italy Program

Each July, Montserrat hosts a four-week residential program affording art students and enthusiasts a unique opportunity to live and study in a country famous for its rich cultural legacy. Classes are held in the Cultural Association of Rosa Venerini (ACRV) in the heart of the Medieval Quarter of Viterbo, about 90 minutes north of Rome.

Journalistic Drawing in Italy

In this course, students develop images both in sketchbooks, and as individual works based directly on their experiences living and traveling in Italy. Students closely observe, document, and comment on their investigations of various aspects of Italian life and culture. On-site drawing is a major focus of the course, as is the use of drawing as a communication tool. Students examine and consider the work of journalistic illustrators as well as artists relevant to the classes’ focus.

Fred Lynch

Fred Lynch created and teaches the course, and is a professor of illustration at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). He taught for many years at Montserrat College of Art and chaired their illustration department for over a decade. He's won the highest teaching awards at both institutions, and his onsite drawings are internationally recognized.

Kelly Murphy

Kelly Murphy has worked as course's co-teacher. She's a Senior Critic at Rhode Island School of Design and has won countless awards for her artwork. Kelly's books have been translated into 13 languages. She too, taught at Montserrat for many years.

Karen JY Sung

Karen is the assistant teacher for the course in 2016, and is currently in the Masters Program at The Royal College of Art in London where she focuses on communication design and journalistic drawing. She's a RISD alumna and her work has was exibited last year in the Reportager Award Exhibition at the University of the West of England. She was a student in the course and served as the teaching assistant in 2014.
